The Larnaca Sewerage and Drainage Board, following a tender conducted for the supply, installation, operation and maintenance for a period of nine months of a pilot hospital wastewater treatment plant, proceeded on June 17, 2022, to award the project to the S.K. EUROMARKET LTD company. The design of the pilot unit and the technical specifications were defined in detail by the project partners, HMU, Nireas – International Water Research Center (University of Cyprus) and University of the Aegean.
The lead partner of the project is the Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Heraklion (DEYAH), which will install a similar pilot unit at the General Hospital in Heraklion, Crete (PAGNI).
The subject of the contract concerns the detailed design, supply, installation, start-up and training, for a period of 6 months as well as the operation and maintenance for a period of nine months, of a pilot unit within the framework of T4H Project. The project’s full title is “On-Site Hospital Wastewater Management Aimed at Improving the Efficiency of Wastewater Treatment Plants and the Utilization of effluents.” It is funded under the INTERREG V-A GREECE – CYPRUS 2014-2020 cooperation program.
The problem it seeks to solve is the effective removal of specific chemical contaminants, as well as microbiological parameters related to antibiotic resistance, from hospital liquid waste. In order to deal with all sides of this problem (adequate removal, overall environmental and economic performance), the project proposes field tests (within the hospital grounds) of a combination of four technologies applying biological, mechanical (physical) and chemical treatment. The aim is to reduce selected pollutants in the final effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WTPs) to ensure safer reuse for a variety of uses.
The proposed treatment plant consists of a series of four technologies in order: an MBR (AnMBR Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor) unit, an aerobic MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) unit, a small post-treatment unit with Lemna plants and a disinfection unit as a final stage with technology advanced oxidation.
The pilot unit will be installed at the Larnaca General Hospital within the fenced area of the biological purification unit, which was deactivated after the connection of the Hospital’s sewage network with the central sewer of the Larnaca Sewerage and Drainage Board (LSDB).
The contractor company S.K. EUROMARKET LTD, is responsible for commissioning, operating and maintaining the unit for a period of nine months. In addition, she is responsible for training / informing the staff of the LSDB about the sampling points, as well as the general framework of the operation of the unit.
The total Value of the Contract is set at the amount of one hundred and sixty two thousand nine hundred and fifty euros (€162,950.00) plus tax. The total duration of the contract is set at fifteen (15) months from the date of signing of the contract.
